The intersection of West Second Street and Grand Avenue in Downtown LA will have a colorful makeover on Sept. 5, 2017.

The Broad Museum has commissioned a large-scale outdoor public art installation that will change the look of the four crosswalks at the intersection.

The Kinetic-Optical crosswalk art by Venezuelan born artist Carlos Cruz-Diez is intended to offer a perspective of space and time through the observer’s participation and movement. Cruz-Diez is known for his exploration of the visual and perceptual experiences of color.

“A work of art in the public space is magical in that people take possession of and become fond of it,” said Cruz-Diez.

As part of the installation, high school students from the nearby Ramon C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts will participate in painting the work onto the crosswalks throughout the Labor Day weekend.

The installation will be on view into 2018.
