Los Angeles Anime Film Festival

The Los Angeles Anime Film Festival (LA-AFF) kicks off Friday, September 15 -17, 2017 at the Regal L.A. LIVE in Downtown Los Angeles celebrating 100 years of Anime Films!

During opening night (9/15) the highly anticipated prequel film to the popular anime series No Game No Life Zero will premiere, commencing the enthralling festival that will feature the English dubbed version. And, to mark the momentous centennial anniversary of anime films LA-AFF will screen one of the first Japanese animated short films created in 1917 called Namakura Katana by Junichi Kouichi!

In addition to the exciting lineup of films that include a plethora of Award Winners, there will be the release of the first ever North American Premiere of King of Prism by PrettyRhythm. One of the key features that led to the film's major success was the unique "cheering screening style" that allowed the audience to engage with the movie similar to how they would during a live music event by bringing their own glow sticks and cheering the characters during the presentation.

Closing Sunday's finale, Katsuhiro Otomo's timeless cyberpunk masterpiece AKIRA will conclude LA-AFF's festivities.

The festival will feature a full list of events in addition to the film screenings including an opening night red carpet gala and Q&A sessions with directors, voice actors, and film creators to further excite festival-goers.

**Tickets for each screening are on sale at: http://la-aff.eventbrite.com

LA-AFF's goal is to promote the appreciation of anime films abroad and to present a place where people can enjoy anime films with full quality of image, music and acoustics as well as gives people a chance to get to know the world of anime like never before!

Chavela
Documentary Feature
(USA/Mexico/Spain, 2017, 90 min)
Directed By: Catherine Gund & Daresha Kyi
Cast: Chavela Vargas

This stunning documentary captures the impact of Mexico’s most beloved lesbian Rancheras icon—Chavela Vargas—a rebellious, solitary and profoundly wounded trailblazer. An unforgettable journey through the enigmatic life of Chavela, this lyrical love letter interweaves never-before-seen interview footage and mesmerizing musical portraits of her most famous soul-gripping songs. From the spotlight of the stage, Chavela’s tortured vocals and unapologetic queer sensibility subverted gender traditions, inspiring a deeply patriarchal culture to love, to cry, and to feel, like never before.

The Big Sing LA

Free, Giant Singing Event in Grand Park presented by the
Los Angeles Master Chorale

No choir experience required!

The Los Angeles Master Chorale launches into summer with a free group singing event called Big Sing L.A. in Grand Park on Saturday, June 24 at 1 PM.

Five dynamic choral conductors will lead participants through a program of popular, well known songs alongside short easy-to-learn choral pieces that the conductors will teach. In addition, professional singers from the Los Angeles Master Chorale will perform a short set of music before interspersing amongst the attendees to provide expert encouragement for the main event. Conductors include Grant Gershon, Eric Whitacre, Francisco Núñez, Moira Smiley, and Rollo Dilworth, who will take turns leading the crowd from the Grand Park stage located in the downtown park between Grand Avenue and Hill Street. Songs such as “Lean On Me,” “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water” will be performed and lyric sheets will be provided.

“Come and sing with us! Big Sing L.A. is an opportunity to bring people together from all over the city to share in the joy of singing as part of a large group,” said Los Angeles Master Chorale Artistic Director Grant Gershon. “We have chosen songs that people will either already know, or that are easy to learn, and encourage people of all abilities to be part of this event.”

“Harmony can sometimes be in short supply in our daily lives, so the Big Sing L.A. offers the opportunity to come together harmoniously and—most of all—have some fun!”

As a prelude to the musical activities, four of the city’s most popular food trucks will also be in Grand Park near the stage area, serving from 12 noon and people are encouraged to come early and enjoy lunch on the lawn. Food will be available for purchase. Complimentary water will be provided to participants, courtesy of Coca Cola. No choir experience is required to participate.

People interested in participating in Big Sing L.A. are encouraged to sign up for email updates and information about the event at http://lamasterchorale.org/big-sing-la.

The Big Sing L.A. is supported by the California Arts Council, the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, Metro and Wells Fargo.

Kid Kon 2017!

Kid Kon is the first-ever fan convention of its kind; a convention with the young fans in mind. As fans of popular entertainment ourselves, we take our two kids to conventions all the time, and half the time they are bored out of their minds because the programming is usually skewed toward an older audience.

The goal of Kid Kon is to throw the biggest fandom party any kid has ever seen, celebrating the popular arts like comic books, movies, books, video games, and tv shows that kids are rabid fans of, and giving them a once in a lifetime chance to meet their favorite celebrities in person.

Join us at Kid Kon, where kids of all ages can kick the summer off right!

COST: $20
