How to Read El Pato Pascual

How to Read El Pato Pascual

How to Read El Pato Pascual: Disney’s Latin America and Latin America’s Disney is an attempt to engage with the idea that there are no clean boundaries in art, culture, and geography, and to deconstruct how such notions are formed and disputed. For over seventy-five years, the Walt Disney Company has continuously looked to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America for content, narratives, and characters, beginning with Donald Duck’s first role in the Mexican-themed Don Donald (1937).

The 1971 text by Chilean scholars Ariel Dorfman and Armand Mattelart—Para leer al Pato Donald—considered Disney comic books as a form of cultural imperialism, and the curators have used its arguments as a starting point to show that Disney cannot be seen as something simply exported to the rest of the Americas, and passively received. Like any other cultural force or mythology in Latin America, Disney imagery has always been quickly reinterpreted, assimilated, adapted, cannibalized, syncretized, and subverted in popular culture and the fine arts.

Spanning painting, photography, graphic work, drawing, sculpture, and video, as well as folk art and vernacular objects, joint exhibitions at the MAK Center for Art and Architecture at the Schindler House and the Luckman Fine Arts Complex at Cal State LA explore this history and the ways Latin American artists have responded to, played with, re-appropriated, and misappropriated Disney iconography.

Please be advised that this exhibition contains mature themes.

Exhibition Dates: September 09 - January 14, 2017

Gallery hours: Monday through Thursday & Saturday, 12:00 PM - 5:00 PM.

Admission to the Luckman Gallery is free of charge.

Los Angeles Anime Film Festival

The Los Angeles Anime Film Festival (LA-AFF) kicks off Friday, September 15 -17, 2017 at the Regal L.A. LIVE in Downtown Los Angeles celebrating 100 years of Anime Films!

During opening night (9/15) the highly anticipated prequel film to the popular anime series No Game No Life Zero will premiere, commencing the enthralling festival that will feature the English dubbed version. And, to mark the momentous centennial anniversary of anime films LA-AFF will screen one of the first Japanese animated short films created in 1917 called Namakura Katana by Junichi Kouichi!

In addition to the exciting lineup of films that include a plethora of Award Winners, there will be the release of the first ever North American Premiere of King of Prism by PrettyRhythm. One of the key features that led to the film's major success was the unique "cheering screening style" that allowed the audience to engage with the movie similar to how they would during a live music event by bringing their own glow sticks and cheering the characters during the presentation.

Closing Sunday's finale, Katsuhiro Otomo's timeless cyberpunk masterpiece AKIRA will conclude LA-AFF's festivities.

The festival will feature a full list of events in addition to the film screenings including an opening night red carpet gala and Q&A sessions with directors, voice actors, and film creators to further excite festival-goers.

**Tickets for each screening are on sale at: http://la-aff.eventbrite.com

LA-AFF's goal is to promote the appreciation of anime films abroad and to present a place where people can enjoy anime films with full quality of image, music and acoustics as well as gives people a chance to get to know the world of anime like never before!

Superheroic Play Date!

JOIN US FOR ENDLESS FOOD, GAMES, ROBOT DANCE MOVES, AND MORE.

Our League of Play Dates will debut on July 15. We'll have live music, food trucks, barbecue, tons of games that will engage parents and kids together, and we just plan on playing all day. The park is ours!  The event is FREE and open to the public.  We just want this to be the World's Biggest Play Date Ever!

Play is in our veins. Embedded into our brains. Remember that feeling of running so fast that it felt like your legs would fall off? And if you outstretched your arms, you could take off at any moment? Remember spinning around until you couldn’t stand and climbing until you could see the whole world? Remember jumping distances that made you feel invincible and laughing until you couldn’t breathe? Play is good. Don’t let them lose it.
